Five writs, five different wrongs. Habeas corpus produces a body the state is holding. Mandamus commands an official to do a duty they are dodging. Quo warranto asks by what authority someone sits in a post. The two that get confused are certiorari and prohibition, and the confusion is worth clearing: prohibition stops a tribunal while it is still mid-case and has strayed outside its power. Certiorari reaches back after the fact and quashes a ruling a tribunal had no power to make. Same defect, two different remedies, and the only thing separating them is when you catch it.
