Draw a bow and the energy being stored scales with the square of how far back it’s pulled, not in a straight line with it. Release, and that stored energy doesn’t vanish — it becomes the arrow’s motion, brightest right after the shot, gone entirely at the peak of the arc, and back again on the way down, unless friction has already leaked some of it away as heat.
