There is no mission here and nothing to lose. The only thing your thumb changes is how far you have gone, and how far you have gone is the only thing the light knows: the sun sits at an altitude computed from your distance, and everything else on the card falls out of that one number -- the sky, the colour of the sea, the length of every shadow, the warmth on the tarmac, which lamp has flickered on, whether the neon reads yet, how much the headlights are doing. Drive long enough and the sun sets, which is the whole payoff, and nothing was ever at stake to earn it.
